Monthly Archives: April 2005

I just added my older TDK CD-RW drive back into this system, giving me two optical drives (there’s a DVD burner on this box, too). Thing is, I can remember when paper tape was state-of-the-art…

:o )

Well, I’ve tabulated the results of the Prettiest National Flag Poll. The winners are:

Antarctica

Hong Kong

The Seychelles

South Africa

Thanks, worlordkittens and zazuomgwtf, for voting.

:o )

John Young, Charlie Duke, and Ken Mattingly splashed down in the Pacific, successfully completing the mission of Apollo 16.

I’ve had a LiveJournal account for almost two months. I use the journal quite a bit. I rather like it. So, I upgraded to a paid account.

I can just hear it now:

“So you’re going to post by phone?”

No.

No.

“Post pictures?”

Possibly.

“You’re going to use text messaging?”

No!

“But you get virtually everything else with a free account. Why pay?”

LiveJournal is a business. They have costs; they collect revenue, pay their costs from that revenue, and if they’re lucky, have something left over as profit.

“Huh?”

Yeah. That’s what I thought.

I realize that too many people want everything their little hearts desire at no cost to themselves. This includes going to “their work” to receive an inflated remuneration for pretending to do something. I only wish that the few who understand the First Law of Economics (“There ain’t no free lunch”) could go on strike, as it were, leaving the rest to reap their reward.

No, I don’t expect it to happen. I can dream, can’t I?

I just left a comment on one of zazuomgwtf’s posts, making a comment that she “probably didn’t want to shitcan” an investment in some computer programs. When I ran the spell checker over my reply, it didn’t like “shitcan”. One of the suggested replacements was…

(Giggle)

“Vatican”

Oh, Josef Ratzinger should see this!

:o )

There are some really nice images for the root window (I guess some people call them “wallpaper”?) at the HubbleSite, already sized for a number of screens. These images are in JPEG format, so it is still necessary to convert them to PNG if you are using fvwm-root, but the resizing and cropping are already done, at least.

Yes, I grabbed them all, every one of them :o )

Thirty-three years ago, today, John Young and Charles Duke were conducting their third and final EVA on the lunar surface, while Ken Mattingly orbited the moon in the Apollo 16 CSM.

Well, I just did my clothes shopping for the year, dropping almost $120 at oldnavy.com Three skirts, a blazer, a couple of tee-shirts; all I can say is that I hope it all fits when it gets here (translating sizes across body types is always fun, no matter how much I do it).

New wardrobe and stuff, I should be all happy, right? Right? Anyone?

Recently, there has been a row over Darren Mackay’s display of the Nazi flag in his back yard.

He claimed that his daughter “liked the pretty colors”.

Here’s a chance for you of the Live Journal audience to pick the flag you consider prettiest. Please go to www.photius.com/flags/alphabetic_list.html, and have a look at the flags pictured there, then drop a comment here, naming the one you consider prettiest. In a few days (probably Wednesday), I’ll tabulate the results and present them here.

Vote early, vote often :o )

But still remembering the Apollo 13 splashdown (17 April 1970). Those were three people very happy to be home…
